Yuchai Delivers China’s First Ammonia Dual-Fuel Marine Engine

Zhuhai, China — Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Grouphas successfully delivered the country’s first 6X52DF-A-1.0 low-speed ammonia dual-fuel marine engine at its Zhuhai facility, marking a major milestone in its push toward green and low-carbon marine Power Solutions.

The newly delivered engine will be installed on a series of 25,000-cubic-meter LPG/liquid ammonia carriers. Utilizing high-pressure liquid ammonia direct injection technology, the engine demonstrates load response and dynamic performance comparable to conventional diesel engines in both ammonia and diesel operating modes.

To meet stringent environmental requirements, the main engine is equipped with a high-pressure selective catalytic reduction (HPSCR) system, ensuring compliance with the International Maritime Organization Tier III emission standards while supporting low-carbon operations.

In July 2025, Yuchai Marine Power initiated the construction of an ammonia fuel supply station in coordination with project partners, providing critical infrastructure support for bench testing and production delivery of the ammonia dual-fuel engine. During factory trials, the entire process—from the first switch to ammonia mode and load calibration to emissions testing and final acceptance—was completed in just three days. Throughout testing, the engine achieved zero liquid ammonia leakage and maintained stable performance, setting a new record for the fastest ammonia-mode delivery in the industry.

Yuchai has continued to expand its portfolio of alternative fuel marine engines, progressing from natural gas to methanol and now ammonia. The company has established a comprehensive product matrix covering mainstream clean fuels for low-speed marine engines.

The successful delivery of the 6X52DF-A-1.0 ammonia dual-fuel engine not only represents a key milestone in Yuchai’s development, but also highlights China’s growing role in the global transition toward zero-carbon shipping. The breakthrough is expected to inject strong momentum into the decarbonization of the international maritime industry.
